doubting. are an emo/pop punk band based in Dublin, who aim to make music that is as catchy as it is emotionally something. doubting have released two projects this year – Old Songs, a remotely recorded EP of the first songs we wrote together, and the self-titled Doubting, a project recorded in the weeks before COVID closed everything down. doubting are currently working on new music and getting ready to perform again as soon as possible.
Members of doubting. also run No Home Records, and set up the virtual charity festival Electric Bricnic, a Minecraft-based event, during the pandemic. Below, the band chat about the 10 songs that inspired them to make the music they do!
Duster – Echo, Bravo
This is perhaps the most massive song from Duster’s debut album, and we definitely tried to emulate the sheer enormity of this track on the latter half of Kissed by the Stars, albeit without the lo-fi, cassette-like crunch.Axis Of – Beachcomber
This personal, room-recorded track is somewhat of an outlier from Derry-based Axis Of’s second record, which is otherwise full of triumphant anthems. I have always been a fan of how this track comes in out of left field to break the tension, almost like a detour from the main journey. No Reflection is our attempt to do something in a similar vein. The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die – January 10th 2014
TWIABP are the masters of blending emo anthems with blooming post-rock sounds, and this is perhaps the biggest track from 2015’s Harmlessness. I feel like personally, this album has influenced almost every single project I’ve worked on since I first heard it.Antartigo Vespucci – Impossible to Place
The brief discography of Chris Farren and Jeff Rosenstock’s amazing named side-project is filled to the brim with songs that are short, loud and dangerously catchy. Songs like Crabwalking and Infinite Bullshit owe quite a lot to songs like this one from their 2015 LP Leavin’ La Vida Loca.Knola – Ruby Beach
Knola features members of Xerxes, William Bonney, Oliver Houston, Boy Rex, and Midwest Pen Pals, and is fronted by Jack Senff, renowned screamo genius. This track, from their 23-minute debut full-length, is one of the best examples of how to mix this genre of music, in my opinion. Influence can particularly be heard in the chorus of Serotonin.Jeff Rosenstock – June 21st
When I saw him live I was in awe of his energy, it really translates from record to stage. I can't tell you how many times I've screamed this song with my friends while drinking, I love it.Pixies – Where is My Mind
It holds a lot of memories, just hanging with my friends in a field during summer, especially before the last year of school. I recorded us singing it one night cos I thought it would be fun, and it ended up on "Infinite Bullshit".The Hotelier – In Framing
This song is so upbeat and driven with a really sad story. I love the dynamic of happy sounding sad songs and I feel like this one does it best.Joyce Manor – Heated Swimming Pool
Unreal tune and great closer to an album. I love short, poppy songs and this song is like the perfect example of that for me.Cloud Nothings – Stay Useless
It made a lot of sense to me during the pandemic and struggling to finish college, and it all kinda felt funny so I'd end up a bit happier at the end of the song. And then I'd play it again.
